Flare and Safety Day
Committee Chair: Joan Tannen [email protected]

SOS offers Flare and Safety Day every year right before the sailing season starts.  Approximately
50 members attend.
At this outdoor event we have approximately eight stations where participants
work on hands-on skills such as the use of a fire extinguisher and fire blanket, anchoring, line toss,
the proper use of a passing line, how to use a hand-held flare
and an aerial flare, as well as everything
you ever wanted to know about PFDs.

Flare and Safety Day is held on a Saturday in late April at a summer camp in the Annapolis area.  It lasts two to three hours and is usually scheduled the same weekend as Dockside Training so participants can attend both events back-to-back if they want.

This training is arranged in advance and is announced to the SOS membership in the Whisker Pole with the sign-up fee and the deadline date.

Volunteers are needed for assistance with the following tasks:

Registrations:  A volunteer is needed to manage registrations as they are submitted and sign attendees in as they arrive on site at the event.  In addition, it would be helpful if this volunteer coordinated the submission of a waiver required by the camp for all attendees and any attendee communications on directions, etc.

Promotions:  A volunteer is needed to write promotional articles for the Whisker Pole over a month in advance and then again as the event gets closer.

Signage:  A volunteer is needed to put up a few signs directing attendees to the correct training location within the camp.

Coordinate Flare Exchange:  Skippers are allowed to exchange out of date flares for new flares in preparation for Flare and Safety Day.  The old flares are used at the flare station on the day of the training.  This volunteer would communicate with skippers to coordinate the flare exchange via established cub policies.

Hope you’ll help with this fun and important safety training!
